New Study Links Consumption of Fruit Juice to Weight Gain in Children and Adults
A recent analysis of 42 previous studies has found that drinking just one glass or more of 100% fruit juice each day is associated with weight gain in both children and adults. The research discovered a positive link between consuming fruit juice and an increase in body mass index (BMI) among kids, as well as weight gain in adults.
Although the increases in BMI were small, they varied depending on age, with younger children showing a greater increase per additional serving of 100% fruit juice. This finding supports the need for caution regarding the amount of fruit juice consumed.
The study suggests that the consumption of liquid calories, the lack of fiber in fruit juice, and the lower satiety compared to whole fruit may be contributing factors to weight gain. Therefore, being mindful about the amount of fruit juice consumed aligns with public health guidance aimed at preventing overweight and obesity.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has provided guidelines regarding fruit juice consumption for children. For children younger than 6, it is recommended that they consume less than a glass of fruit juice per day, with children younger than 1 advised to avoid juice entirely. The AAP’s guidelines for other age groups suggest limiting juice to 4, 6, or 8 ounces daily for children aged 1-3, 4-6, and 7-18, respectively.
In line with these guidelines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends adding a splash of 100% juice to plain or sparkling water as a refreshing and low-calorie alternative to consuming fruit juice. This can help reduce the intake of liquid calories and promote healthier habits.
Overall, this new analysis highlights the potential risks associated with excessive fruit juice consumption. By being mindful of the amount consumed, individuals can make healthier choices to prevent weight gain and promote overall well-being.
