NASA is looking for brave individuals to participate in its second planned CHAPEA mission, a simulated mission to Mars. Scheduled to begin in spring 2025, a volunteer crew of four people will live inside Mars Dune Alpha in Houston for a full year.
Those selected for this mission will face a series of challenges including equipment failure, communication delays, and limited resources. In order to qualify, applicants must be healthy US citizens between the ages of 30-55 with a background in STEM and be able to pass an astronaut physical test. The selection process will also include medical, psychological, and psychiatric tests to ensure the crew is mentally and physically prepared for the mission.
The first CHAPEA mission, which began in June 2023, is set to conclude in July 2023. The current crew has already made significant progress, having harvested crops, gone on simulated Marswalks, and conducted various experiments. The lessons learned from this mission will be invaluable in helping NASA prepare for future Martian missions and fill in knowledge gaps about what it takes to survive and thrive on the red planet.
If you think you have what it takes to be a part of this groundbreaking mission, now is your chance to apply and potentially make history as one of the first humans to simulate living on Mars. NASA is looking for individuals who are up for the challenge and ready to push the boundaries of human exploration beyond Earth.
