The United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres, has issued a stark warning about the slow progress towards legal equality for women around the world. During a recent speech, Guterres expressed concern that it may take centuries to achieve true equality due to widespread discrimination and human rights abuses.
One troubling example highlighted by Guterres is the situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Girls in Afghanistan are being denied access to education and employment, reflecting a global backlash against women’s rights. Gender-based violence, the gender pay gap, and the underrepresentation of women in politics are also major issues that continue to prevail worldwide.
With the theme of International Women’s Day this year being ‘Investing in Women and Girls to Accelerate Progress Towards Equality,’ Guterres stressed the importance of prioritizing the needs of women and girls. The head of the UN political mission in Afghanistan criticized the Taliban’s crackdown on women and girls, stating that it is a deliberate disinvestment that harms their mental and physical health.
UN Women head, Sima Bahous, echoed Guterres’ concerns and emphasized the urgent need for funding and policies that support gender equality. To support governments in promoting gender equality, Guterres announced the launch of a Gender Equality Acceleration Plan.
Bahous called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and emphasized the economic benefits of investing in women and girls. She believes that by investing in women and girls, countries can achieve economic growth, thriving governments, and peace sooner. As the fight for gender equality continues, the international community must prioritize the needs of women and girls to ensure a more equal future for all.
