Heartland Magazine – Two Young Brothers Diagnosed with Rare Disease, Batten Disease
Spokane, Washington – In a heartbreaking turn of events, two young brothers from Spokane have been diagnosed with a rare disease known as Batten disease. This devastating illness causes childhood dementia and has left their parents, Kristian and Bryden Tucker, devastated.
The first signs of the disease appeared when Michael, aged six, began experiencing severe seizures. Worried about their son’s health, the family sought medical help, and after a series of tests, the heartbreaking diagnosis was delivered – Michael had Batten disease.
Unwilling to take any chances, the rest of the family underwent testing a month later. The results were devastating once again – Michael’s younger brother Oliver, aged two, was also diagnosed with the same condition. The family was left reeling from the news.
Doctors explained that Batten disease affects about one in 25,000 babies and slowly shuts down the brain over five to ten years. As the disease progresses, sufferers lose the ability to speak, move, see, and swallow. Usually, only five years after symptoms begin, those with Batten disease sadly pass away.
Upon further examination, it was discovered that Kristian and Bryden carry a gene that raises the risk of Batten disease. This heartbreaking revelation left the parents grappling with feelings of guilt and despair. However, they are determined to do everything in their power to support their boys during this difficult time.
The family is currently scheduled for surgery and treatments that will slow down the progression of the disease and improve the boys’ quality of life. Although the diagnosis has been devastating, the boys are currently doing well, and the family is making the most of their time together.
Kristian and Bryden are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from their community. They have set up a fundraising campaign to help cover the medical expenses associated with their sons’ treatment. The community has rallied behind them, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion.
Heartland Magazine sends its deepest sympathies to the Tucker family during this challenging time. We stand in solidarity with them as they navigate the difficult road ahead.
