Title: Fort Collins Takes Precautionary Measures Against West Nile Virus
The city of Fort Collins recently announced plans to combat the West Nile virus-carrying mosquito population in southeast Fort Collins. As reported by Heartland Magazine, this Sunday, August 13, will mark the second round of spraying for the majority of neighborhoods within the designated area this season.
The decision to proceed with the spraying process was based on the vector index, which measures the levels of West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes and the potential risk of human transmission. At present, the vector index for southeast Fort Collins stands at 1.34, emphasizing the need for prompt action.
Scheduled to take place between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., the spraying will encompass the area between College Avenue on the west, Interstate 25 on the east, Drake Road on the north, and Carpenter Road on the south. With the intention of minimizing pesticide exposure, residents and their pets are advised to remain indoors during the spraying period and keep doors and windows closed for an additional 30 to 60 minutes thereafter.
Furthermore, to further reduce pesticide exposure, individuals with organic gardens, ponds, and water features are encouraged to cover them with sheets or tarps during the spraying process.
The city has hired Vector Disease Control International as the contractor responsible for implementing the spraying. In an effort to minimize conflicts with outdoor events, the contractor will adjust the spraying schedule accordingly.
Residents will have the opportunity to track the progress of the fogging trucks in real-time on the city’s website at www.fcgov.com/westnile/.
With West Nile virus cases on the rise, state officials are urging residents to take adequate precautions. As of Tuesday, Colorado has reported a total of 12 West Nile virus cases, including three in Larimer County. Last year, the state reported 206 human cases with 20 resulting fatalities.
Adding to the urgency, a fatal case of West Nile virus was reported in Weld County last Friday. Further details about the deceased person have not been disclosed, raising concerns and underscoring the importance of community awareness regarding the potentially deadly virus.
In light of these circumstances, it is crucial for residents to closely follow the city’s guidelines and remain vigilant to protect themselves and their loved ones from the West Nile virus.
