In a shocking incident, a Vervet monkey bit an 11-year-old boy during a family gathering in San Antonio, prompting an investigation by the Animal Care Services (ACS). The family immediately sought medical attention for the boy’s right ear bite and reported the incident to ACS on Monday.
The Vervet monkey, known for its gray fur and dark faces, is a medium- to large-sized species native to Southeastern Africa. These monkeys typically live in groups called troops with a detailed social hierarchy. However, owning monkeys or other primates in the City of San Antonio is strictly prohibited.
Monkey bites can pose serious risks of diseases such as rabies, Herpes B virus, HIV, and monkeypox. As a result, the previous owner of the Vervet monkey was cited for the bite, lack of proof of rabies vaccination, and possessing a prohibited species. The monkey has since been surrendered to ACS.
Investigators are now collaborating with the Texas Department of State Health Services and local primate experts to determine the quarantine requirements for the monkey. It is crucial to ensure the safety of both the public and the animal in such incidents.
As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with owning exotic animals and the importance of following local regulations. The well-being of both humans and animals must be prioritized to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
