New CDC Study Reveals 54% Increased Protection from Latest COVID-19 Booster Shot
A new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that the latest COVID-19 booster shot offers a significant 54% increased protection against the virus for adults. The shot, which was approved in September, not only provides protection against the original strain of the virus but also against the more recent lineages and mutations.
Leading infectious disease specialist, Dr. Bruce Hirsch, is encouraging more New Yorkers to receive the booster as the current data shows that less than 10% of Long Islanders have chosen to get the shot so far. However, it’s essential to note that the study has its limitations, primarily due to a lack of data on the booster’s effectiveness in preventing severe COVID illness.
The nationwide study, which involved the analysis of over 9,200 people with COVID-like symptoms, was conducted at CVS and Walgreens locations between September and January. Among those who received the booster, the study found that it was 58% effective in preventing symptomatic infection. However, effectiveness decreased over time, with those receiving their shot 60 to 119 days earlier experiencing a 49% effectiveness rate.
These findings align with previous research that has demonstrated the vaccine’s efficacy against COVID infection. Additionally, health officials note that the booster’s overall efficacy surpasses the annual effectiveness rate of the influenza vaccine.
Despite the booster being authorized for anyone aged 6 months or older, the uptake remains low across the nation, with only 17% of Americans having received the booster so far. In New York State, the rates are even lower. Long Island, in particular, has a shockingly low rate of booster recipients, ranking in the bottom 20% of all counties in the state.
There are several factors contributing to this low uptake, including decreased enthusiasm for the vaccine and the widespread belief that the current strain of the virus causes less severe disease. However, it’s important to recognize that the COVID positivity rate has been decreasing in recent weeks both statewide and on Long Island. This decline could be attributed to a combination of factors, including vaccination efforts and increased awareness of preventive measures.
Health officials are urging individuals to prioritize their health and the health of their community by getting the COVID-19 booster shot. The data clearly shows that the booster offers a significant increase in protection against the virus, and increasing vaccination rates will help ensure a safer and healthier future for all.
