The Miami Dolphins have made significant moves to free up cap space by releasing Xavien Howard and Emmanuel Ogbah from their roster. The decision to cut ties with Howard, a former first-team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, comes as a surprise to many given his stellar performance over the years. However, releasing Howard after June 1 would save the Dolphins a whopping $18.5 million in 2024.
On the other hand, cutting Howard before June 1 would result in a maximum savings of $2.8 million for Miami, but with up to $30 million in dead cap in 2024. The tensions between Howard and the Dolphins in recent years may have played a role in this decision.
In addition to Howard, the Dolphins have also parted ways with defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, saving $13.7 million in 2024. Ogbah, who signed a lucrative four-year, $65 million contract with Miami in 2020, had a solid performance with 18 combined sacks in 2020 and 2021. However, he was limited by a triceps injury in 2022.
These roster moves indicate that the Dolphins are looking to restructure their team and free up cap space for future acquisitions. Fans will be eager to see how Miami utilizes this newfound financial flexibility to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
