Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company is increasing the compensation for its artificial intelligence engineers in response to efforts by OpenAI to recruit them. Musk revealed that OpenAI has been aggressively poaching Tesla engineers with lucrative offers, leading to some engineers defecting to the AI firm.
OpenAI is renowned for its generative AI technology, including the ChatGPT chatbot, which quickly gained popularity to become the fastest-growing software application globally within six months of its launch. The demand for AI engineers has seen a sharp increase, despite other tech companies laying off employees in various departments over the past year.
Although Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, he distanced himself from the company in 2018. He is currently involved in a legal battle with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a breach of their founding agreement to develop AI for the betterment of humanity rather than solely for profit.
In response to the competition posed by OpenAI and Google bots, Musk has launched his own AI startup, xAI. The goal of xAI is to create an AI that prioritizes seeking maximum truth rather than focusing solely on profit-making goals.
The move by Tesla to boost compensation for its AI engineers is seen as a strategic response to the rising competition in the AI field, as companies vie for top talent to drive innovation and advancements in artificial intelligence.
