A powerful blast shook a military base near Baghdad housing members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a group with close ties to Iran. The explosion at the Kalsu military base, located 20 miles south of Baghdad, resulted in the death of one PMF fighter and left six others wounded.
Both Israeli and US officials have denied any involvement in the blast, which comes after a series of rocket and drone attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria, attributed to PMF groups. The PMF, which has been accused of being “infiltrated” by Iran, holds significant influence in Iraq.
The incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the region as various factions supported by Iran, including the PMF in Iraq, continue to take actions against US and Israeli interests. In response to an attack on Israel by Iran, Israel launched a “limited” strike near an airbase in Iran’s Isfahan. This strike was retaliatory in nature, following a bombing of an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria.
The complex web of conflicts in the region highlights the power struggles and retaliatory actions between different factions backed by Iran. As the situation continues to escalate, the impact on the stability and security of the region remains uncertain.
