Flights Disrupted at Port-au-Prince Airport in Haiti Due to Heavy Gunfire
For the second consecutive day, flights at the Port-au-Prince airport in Haiti have been disrupted due to heavy gunfire nearby. The US Embassy has issued a security alert warning of gunfire and disruptions in the airport vicinity, prompting American Airlines to suspend service between Miami and Port-au-Prince. Haitian airline Sunrise Airways has also suspended all flights for passenger safety.
Additionally, a US deportation flight to Haiti has been canceled amid dire conditions and detainee complaints. The country has been plagued by surging gang violence, unrest, and crime, with more than 8,400 people falling victim to violence last year.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry is facing criticism for his failure to address the violence and hold elections, with powerful gang leader Jimmy Cherizier aiming to overthrow his government. In response to the escalating situation, there has been international support for a security mission in Haiti.
Kenya has signed an agreement to send 1,000 police officers to lead the mission, while the US plans to contribute $200 million to a multinational security support mission in Haiti. The goal of this mission is to contain the violence and restore stability in the country.
As the situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate, the international community is stepping in to provide much-needed support and assistance to the Haitian people. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
