A Rare Comet’s Spectacular Return to the Skies After 70 Years
Excitement is building among astronomers and stargazers alike as the comet 12P/Pons-Brooks makes its way around the inner region of the Solar System for the first time in over 70 years. At 30 kilometers across, this comet is comparable in size to Mount Everest and is one of the brightest known periodic comets.
This rare celestial event is a treat for skywatchers, as the comet will be visible until April 21, 2024, with the best time for viewing towards the end of March. The comet can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope as it moves through the constellations of Pisces and Aries. On March 31, it will be very close to the bright star Hamal, making it easier to spot.
Interestingly, the comet may also be visible during the total solar eclipse in the US on April 8, 2024. However, it is important to note that the comet will only be observable in the Southern Hemisphere after reaching its perihelion on April 21.
Known as a ‘devil’ comet, 12P/Pons-Brooks erupts periodically, becoming much brighter during these events. It leaves behind a tail of glowing material due to solar wind interacting with the material.
Leading experts in astronomy, Dr. Paul Strรธm and Dr. Darren Baskill, provide insights on comets and their significance in our understanding of the universe. They also mention that other comets, such as the 13P/Olbers comet and the C/2023 A3 comet, are expected to be visible in the upcoming months.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness the beauty of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks as it graces our skies with its presence after seven long decades. Grab your binoculars and head outside to witness this stunning cosmic display.
