Florida Gators Release 2023 Depth Chart Ahead of Season Opener
With just 72 hours to go until kickoff, the Florida Gators have unveiled their first official depth chart for the 2023 season. There were no surprises among the offensive starters, with redshirt junior Graham Mertz confirmed as the starting quarterback.
One interesting highlight on the depth chart is the placement of Montrell Johnson Jr. ahead of Trevor Etienne on the running back depth chart. However, it is worth noting that both players will be frequently utilized throughout the season.
On offense, what stands out is the lack of “OR” designations, which often indicate players sharing a position. In fact, most of the “OR” designations appear on the defensive side of the depth chart. This is a departure from previous years, as the Gators had a total of 13 “OR” designations this season, compared to 15 on their 2019 depth chart.
The starting offensive lineup consists of familiar faces from last season, showcasing the talent and experience that will be crucial for the Gators’ success. Fans can expect exciting plays from these offensive playmakers.
Meanwhile, on defense, there are still some undecided positions. Jaydon Hill or Jadarrius Perkins and Jalen Kimber or Devin Moore are yet to be determined as starters. This suggests that competition for these positions has been fierce during preseason practices.
There was also a surprising revelation on the defensive side of the ball. Freshman Jordan Castell will be starting at safety, surpassing the expectations of many who anticipated Kamari Wilson or R.J. Moten to take the starting spot. Castell’s performance during training camp must have impressed the coaching staff, leading to this unexpected decision.
Lastly, the special teams depth chart shows split duties for kickers and starting offensive playmakers as returners. Four out of the six returning positions on special teams are filled by starters from the offensive lineup. This indicates the Gators’ strategy of utilizing their most talented players in multiple areas to maximize their chances of success.
As the Gators prepare to kick off the 2023 season, fans eagerly anticipate how this depth chart will translate into on-field performances. The experienced offensive lineup, along with some fresh faces on defense and special teams, will surely make for an exciting season of Florida Gators football.
