CDC Releases 2024 List of Recommended Immunizations for Adults
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recently unveiled their much-anticipated 2024 list of recommended immunizations for adults. The CDC has placed significant emphasis on this year’s schedule, citing a concerning number of adults falling behind on their recommended vaccines.
While COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be highly recommended, the CDC has introduced new versions of the vaccine to include both an mRNA and a protein-based adjuvanted formulation. The mRNA vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna, have gained widespread recognition, while Novavax has introduced a protein subunit vaccine.
According to the updated recommendations, all adults should receive at least one dose of the newly formulated COVID vaccine. However, the number of doses and intervals will vary depending on factors such as prior vaccination history and immunocompromised status.
In addition to the COVID vaccine, the CDC’s list now includes specific recommendations for other illnesses. For instance, the vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is now advised for pregnant individuals during specific months, as well as for those aged 60 and older who are at risk for severe cases.
Furthermore, the mumps vaccine, known as the mpox vaccine, is now recommended for all adults at an increased risk of infection, including men who have sex with men and have multiple partners. Additionally, a new MenACWY-MenB combo vaccine has been introduced to prevent meningococcal disease.
Despite the availability and efficacy of vaccines, adult vaccination rates remain worryingly low. Currently, only 40.8% of adults have received flu shots, 17.2% have received COVID vaccines, and a mere 15.9% have received RSV vaccines.
The CDC’s recommendations serve as a valuable resource for healthcare providers aiming to improve these vaccination rates. The list has been approved by CDC Director Mandy Cohen, as well as prominent healthcare organizations such as the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
In conclusion, the CDC’s release of the 2024 list of recommended immunizations for adults brings renewed focus on the importance of staying up-to-date on vaccinations. It aims to address the alarming number of adults lagging behind on essential vaccines, particularly in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With the support of healthcare providers and organizations, it is hoped that these recommendations will lead to improved vaccination rates and ultimately better public health outcomes.
