SpaceX, the renowned aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company, achieved yet another successful launch on November 12. This time, the company launched a pair of O3b mPower satellites for SES, a Luxembourg-based operator, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The satellites, designed and built by Boeing, were launched into medium Earth orbit (MEO). After the launch, SES confirmed successful contact with the satellites, which will take a few months to reach their final positions in MEO. These satellites are crucial for SES to enhance its global connectivity network and provide improved internet and broadband services.
A notable achievement of this launch was the successful landing of Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage booster on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. SpaceX has been leading the way in developing reusable rockets, aiming to reduce the costs associated with space exploration. By successfully landing and reusing its boosters, SpaceX is making significant progress towards achieving this ambitious goal.
However, this launch faced some delays due to electrical issues with the first four satellites in orbit. These issues will inevitably impact the operational life and broadband capacity of the satellite constellation. In response, Boeing has agreed to provide fixes for the five affected satellites and an additional two O3b mPower satellites under an amended contract. This agreement reflects Boeing’s commitment to ensuring the optimum performance of the satellite network.
It is crucial to highlight that the fifth and sixth satellites launched are identical to the initial four satellites. With the successful launch of these satellites, SES is well on track to deploy an initial commercial service that will cover an astonishing 96% of the world’s population by the second quarter of 2024. This achievement will significantly contribute to bridging the digital divide and providing reliable internet access to people worldwide.
Despite this remarkable progress, SES has not yet finalized a launch provider for the two extra satellites included in the amended Boeing contract. This decision will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth expansion and continuation of SES’s network infrastructure.
