Title: Rhode Island Coyote Tests Positive for Rabies After Two Attacks
In a recent incident, a coyote that viciously attacked two individuals in Rhode Island has tested positive for rabies. The attacks took place on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9 in separate wooded locations approximately six miles apart, prompting concerns about public safety in those areas.
The most recent attack occurred in Johnston on Friday, as a man was taking a stroll through the woods when he was unexpectedly bitten on the leg by the aggressive coyote. Displaying immense courage, the man managed to subdue the animal and ultimately suffocate it. Fortunately, he was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment and is now expected to recover from the incident.
Based on the State environmental police officers’ assessment of the coyote’s carcass, it was confirmed to have tested positive for rabies. This same coyote is believed to have carried out another attack on a man walking his dog in Scituate just the day before.
Alarming as this may be, it is important to note that these incidents only represent the third reported case of a rabid coyote in Rhode Island since 1994. Nevertheless, health officials are urging anyone who may have come into contact with the coyote to promptly contact the Rhode Island Department of Health Infectious Disease division. Additionally, they advise ensuring their pets’ rabies vaccinations are up to date, as there is a potential risk of transmission to animals in the vicinity.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have long classified rabies as a viral disease that is often transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. As such, individuals who had any form of contact with the coyote are being strongly encouraged to reach out to the state health department’s Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology for further guidance and information.
While Rhode Island continues to deal with this alarming incident, health officials are working diligently to maintain public safety and prevent the further spread of rabies. As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their beloved pets from potential harm.
