Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has made an announcement that she plans to change districts for the 2024 election. Boebert, who is currently representing Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, intends to seek office in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, which is currently represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck.
Buck, who recently announced that he won’t seek reelection in 2024, cited the Republican Party’s support of former President Donald Trump and what he called an embrace of conspiracy theories as the reason for his decision. In a Facebook video, Boebert expressed the importance of maintaining a conservative voice for Colorado in Congress and keeping the Republican House majority.
The 4th Congressional District includes most of the eastern half of the state, as well as Douglas County and Greeley, while Boebert’s current district covers the northwest corner of the state south through Grand Junction to the southeast corner, east to Pueblo, and the southern central portion of the state.
Boebert’s 2022 bid for reelection was a close race, winning by just over 500 votes with over 300,000 ballots cast. Her Democratic challenger, Adam Frisch, who lost to Boebert in 2022, plans on running for the 3rd Congressional District again.
Several candidates from both parties have already announced their intent to run for Boebert’s seat in the primary election. Boebert has stated that she will continue her efforts fighting against “Democrat socialists and communists” as well as “Hollywood elites and national progressive groups.”
However, Boebert’s decision to switch districts has drawn criticism. The Colorado Democratic Party Chair called her “cowardly” for “abandoning” her constituents. Additionally, a Republican candidate running for the seat Boebert is seeking criticized the move, claiming it would give Democrats control of the House.
As the 2024 election approaches, it will be interesting to see how Boebert’s decision and the ensuing primary race will impact the Republican Party’s presence in Colorado’s congressional delegation.
