Missouri Tigers Start Season with Dominant Win Over South Dakota Coyotes
In their opening game of the season, the Missouri Tigers secured a convincing 35-10 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes. While the win may have been a positive start for the team, the game left fans with a sense of déjà vu as it closely resembled games from last season. One area of concern for the Tigers was their lack of explosive plays and failure to open up the field on offense.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz credited South Dakota’s defense for effectively preventing opportunities for more explosive plays. The Coyotes’ strong defensive performance forced the Tigers to rely on more conservative offensive strategies, raising questions about the team’s overall offensive game plan.
Despite these concerns, quarterback Brady Cook showcased significant improvement from last season. Cook displayed improved comfort in the pocket and demonstrated better progressions and reads, which were areas he struggled with in the past. He completed an impressive 17-of-21 passes for 172 yards and contributed a touchdown to the team’s victory.
Wide receiver Tauskie Dove Burden emerged as a standout player during the game. Burden made seven receptions for 96 yards and scored a touchdown, solidifying his position as one of the Tigers’ top offensive weapons. However, there were also notable mishaps, such as a dropped pass by Mekhi Miller that resulted in an interception.
On the defensive side, Johnny Walker, a defensive end, demonstrated outstanding leadership and contributed six tackles to the team’s success. The Missouri defense held South Dakota to a mere 10 points, marking the second-fewest points and total yards allowed in the Drinkwitz era. The defense also limited South Dakota to less than 40 yards rushing and held them to a conversion rate of just 2-of-13 on third down.
Overall, the Tigers’ defense showcased their potential for the season ahead with a strong performance in their opening game. While questions remain about the team’s offensive strategies, the win against the Coyotes has certainly set a positive tone for the Missouri Tigers as they face future opponents eager to challenge their dominance.
