Title: Deadly Airstrikes in Syria and Iraq Fuel Tensions between US and Iran-Backed Militias
Subtitle: Syrian state media reports casualties as a result of strikes; Iraq’s government condemns US retaliation
In a recent escalation of hostilities in the region, deadly airstrikes have taken place in Syria and Iraq, resulting in casualties and increased tensions between the United States and Iranian-backed militias.
According to Syrian state media reports, casualties were incurred as a result of the strikes; however, no specific numbers were given. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, however, claims that the strikes killed 23 people, all of whom were rank-and-file fighters. Meanwhile, in Iraq, airstrikes near the Syrian border led to the death of 16 individuals, including civilians, and caused significant damage to homes and private properties.
The US conducted the air assault in retaliation for a drone strike that claimed the lives of three American troops in Jordan. This attack was attributed to Iranian-backed militias known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. Iran, however, distanced itself from the assault, asserting that the militias acted independently.
The initial assessment by the US military indicated that the strikes were successful, hitting planned targets and also emerging “dynamic targets” during the operation. However, a detailed casualty assessment is yet to be made available.
Condemnation of the airstrikes has been swift, with Iraq’s foreign ministry planning to summon the US Embassy’s chargรฉ d’affaires to formally protest the strikes on Iraqi military and civilian sites. Iraqi spokesperson al-Awadi criticized the strikes as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, particularly because they targeted facilities belonging to the Population Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition of Iranian-backed militias. The PMF confirmed that one of the targeted sites was an official security headquarters, resulting in 16 deaths, 36 wounded individuals, and ongoing efforts to locate missing individuals.
Amid these tensions, the Iraqi government finds itself in a delicate position, attempting to rein in the Iranian-backed militias while simultaneously condemning the US retaliatory strikes and requesting the withdrawal of American troops. Talks between Iraqi and US military officials have been underway to discuss scaling down the coalition’s presence in Iraq.
In a surprising move, Kataib Hezbollah, one of the main Iran-backed militias, announced a temporary suspension of attacks on American troops. This decision aims to avoid further straining relations with the Iraqi government, which seeks to maintain stability amidst increasing tensions between the US and Iran.
As the situation unfolds, the international community closely watches developments in the Heartland region, and tensions between the US, Iran, and Iraq continue to escalate.
