The Classic 2D Shooter Returns with Contra: Operation Galuga
Fans of the classic Contra series will be delighted to hear that Contra: Operation Galuga is bringing back the beloved 2D run-and-gun arcade style of the original Contra game. This modernized version stays faithful to its roots while offering a fresh take on the classic gameplay.
The game features familiar levels and characters, but also introduces some new playable characters and abilities for players to enjoy. Fully voiced characters and cutscenes add depth to the story, although some critics have noted that the writing can feel stilted and the characters one-dimensional.
Gameplay in Contra: Operation Galuga largely sticks to the traditional formula, with familiar weapons and enemies making a return. However, players can expect some minor tweaks such as the ability to hover, use grapple hooks, and upgrade their weapons as they progress through the game.
The developers have also incorporated elements from previous Contra games, such as the two-weapon system and the inclusion of Arcade and Challenge modes. In Arcade mode, players can team up with friends for four-player co-op action, while Challenge mode sets special limitations to test players’ skills.
While Contra: Operation Galuga offers some fun nostalgia and old school action, some players may find that it doesn’t provide enough new surprises or evolutionary changes in terms of gameplay. Despite this, fans of the series will undoubtedly appreciate the return of the classic 2D shooter in all its glory.
