In a shocking escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia, two people were killed and three others were wounded in Ukrainian shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod. Russian officials confirmed the deadly attack, which occurred during the ongoing Russian presidential election that is widely expected to extend Vladimir Putin’s rule.
Russia claimed to have thwarted attempts by Ukrainian saboteurs to cross the border, as the exchange of long-range missile and rocket fire in Russia’s war on Ukraine continues. Most recently, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in the Samara region, although no casualties were reported.
Ukrainian President praised the country’s military for its new “long-range capability,” which was on display when a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive close to a polling station in the illegally annexed Zaporizhzhia region. These attacks in Belgorod come on the heels of a devastating Russian assault on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, which left at least 21 people dead and more than 50 others hospitalized, according to Ukrainian state media.
The ongoing violence between the two neighboring countries shows no signs of abating, with both sides continuing to inflict damage and casualties on one another. As the world watches on, the fear of further escalation looms large, threatening to further destabilize the already volatile region.
