Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Claim Responsibility for Attacks on US and Israeli Vessels in the Gulf of Aden
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi armed group has claimed responsibility for launching attacks on US and Israeli vessels in the Gulf of Aden. This comes just two weeks after the group announced that they targeted three vessels and a US warship.
The US military has confirmed that the Houthis launched an antiship ballistic missile towards a US-flagged vessel, thankfully with no injuries reported. In addition, the Greek Ministry of National Defence intercepted drones that were targeted at a commercial ship in the Red Sea.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations also confirmed an incident in the Gulf of Aden involving the Houthi attacks. The group claims to have targeted an Israeli ship and launched projectiles at a US warship.
In response, US forces successfully engaged and destroyed four drones over Yemen. The attacks by the Houthis have been ongoing since November, initially in response to Israel’s war on Gaza. However, the attacks have now expanded from Israeli-linked ships to US and UK-owned vessels and warships.
The group has launched over 50 attacks on shipping since November, causing vessels to take longer and more expensive routes to avoid the Red Sea. The situation remains tense as international forces monitor the situation and work to prevent further attacks on commercial and military vessels in the region.
